Institutes of Technology Ireland sponsors astronaut appearance at RDS

Find out what it like working outside the International Space Station while it’s travelling at 17,000 miles an hour!

This year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition will have an extra thrust to it with NASA Astronaut Dan Tani visiting and giving a lecture entitled “Space Travel and living and working in the International Space Station”. The lecture will take place in the main arena at 1.30 p.m. on Friday 13th January and is open to all visitors to the Exhibition.

A veteran of two Space Shuttle missions, Tani has logged over 131 days in space (including 120 days living and working in the International Space Station), and over 39 hours in EVAs (Extra Vehicular Activities i.e. space walks).

Speaking about the Institutes of Technology sponsorship of the astronaut appearance, Dr. Maria Hinfelaar, President of Limerick Institute of Technology and Chair of Institutes of Technology Ireland, said “The Institutes of Technology are delighted to sponsor the astronaut appearance at this year’s Exhibition. The theme of Mr Tani’s address will demonstrate one of the world’s great examples of science, technology, engineering and mathematics ( the so called STEM subjects) working together in successful space travel and exploration. Maria Hinfelaar added “from our links with NASA, where we have three LIT post-graduate students currently, we are aware of the many applications of space research to terrestrial life, for example in health sciences and food production”
